Whew! That was a lot of stuff that I needed to get off my chest. I hope you found the information informative and perhaps even useful. Let me try to summarize the key components of the Type A Diabetic Manifesto.
Type A Diabetics:
- are not willing to be told what’s happening; they are determined to understand what’s happening
- respect the medical community, but are not afraid to challenge conventional wisdom
- view diabetes is a branded name that not only tries to describe too many disease states, but does so poorly
- do not accept being branded as diabetics; rather we prefer the descriptive approach of having an insulin disorder
- believe type 2 diabetes should be called an insulin resistance disorder and be managed functionally as a carbohydrate allergy
- believe type 1 diabetes should be called an (autoimmune) insulin production disorder should be also be primarily managed a carbohydrate allergy with supplemental insulin until automated technology can truly remove dangerous highs and lows
- understand that the underlying conditions around insulin disorders are chronic, but feel empowered to mitigate these suboptimal conditions by using our minds to overcome the physiological dysfunction in order to regain a healthy physiological equilibrium
- understand that “diabetic complications” don’t exist because complications from poor glucose management are not inevitable, and are far more avoidable if you don’t accept being patronized and graded on a curve by current medical community’s standards
Once this manifesto gains traction and transforms how we think, talk, and treat this condition, we should retire all types of diabetes, and retire the term “diabetic” as well. Which means that there would be no more Type A Diabetic either, which is perfectly fine with me.
Being a digital manifesto, this document has the ability to be dynamically updated and improved. To this end, I invite feedback, additional insights, and even strong disagreements on the Type A Diabetic Facebook Page. I look forward to improving this document based on the wisdom of and perspectives of you, the interested reader.
Thank you,
